Oil Pastel Statues
This series of oil pastel statues was inspired by my high school art teacher’s technique for practicing with the medium. I printed black and white photographs of statues on printer paper, and laid the oil pastel directly on top, using the print as a guide for value.

This is the first piece that had me try this technique again later. High school me was struggling with being queer in a world of anti-queerness, and I put those feelings into what was supposed to just be a quick art class practice shading with oil pastels.

While I am not a man, I wanted to channel what I had witnessed the men around me go through, and I used the creation of this piece to imagine what it must be like to be a man. I focused on Michelangelo’s David again, as he’s often used as a reference for the male physique.
